This weekend, the 24th annual STOP-DWI Winter Classic takes center court in Binghamton. This is a project of the Broome County STOP-DWI Program to promote an anti-substance abuse and impaired driving message to student athletes. The weekend is full of basketball games at both Binghamton High School and Seton Catholic Central.

Recently announced, there will be some new additions to this years event format. According to WBNG, here are this year’s exciting enhancements:

  • Two four-team regional divisions with Division I (Charlie Howland Division) played at Binghamton High School and Division II (Charlie Tarricone Division) played at Seton Catholic Central.
  • Games will be played at 6.00pm and 8.00pm at both locations on Friday.
  • Game times are 4:00pm and 6:00pm at Binghamton High School on Saturday and 3:00pm and 7:00pm at Seton Catholic Central on Saturday.
  • There will be no national division and no games played at the Arena. There will also be no dunk or 3-point contest.

From the Broome County website, the ultimate goal of the weekend is education in focus:

The STOP-DWI Winter Classic is more than just top caliber basketball – it’s an educational experience. STOP-DWI invites high school teams from across New York State to participate in this outstanding tournament which uses basketball as a tool to create a unique and exciting learning experience for youth. Through involvement in the tournament, high school students are encouraged to become leaders in the effort to deal with substance abuse in their community. By participating in Teen Traffic Safety Day and hosting our “Just Drive” program, thousands of students each year learn about the traffic safety challenges that young drivers face everyday on our roadways.

If you’re looking to support the cause and check out some competitive basketball, this year’s event schedule can be found on the STOP DWI website.
