Country music star Randy Travis was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated in North Texas on August 8, 2012. The events surrounding the arrest appear to be quite unusual since it was reported that nudity, threats to harming police officers and multiple 911 calls were involved. Travis’s problems with alcohol have been well-documented throughout his career. This is just the latest of many encounters Travis has experienced with law enforcement.

Even if you aren’t a country music fan you have probably heard of Randy Travis. He has a singing career that has lasted for over twenty five years. During that time he has received 7 Grammy awards, 10 American Music Awards, 10 Academy of Country Music Awards as well as other accolades. His unique baritone voice has helped him sell over 25 million records in country and gospel music. He also has an acting career that includes work in movies and television. In 2004, Travis received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Prior to being arrested for DWI, Travis allegedly walked into a convenience store naked intending to buy cigarettes. For many people, seeing a naked man walk into a store would be quite shocking. Apparently, the clerk was able to keep his composure and asked Travis how he was going to pay for the cigarettes. After Travis left the store, the clerk called 911 to report the incident.

Later that night, a man spotted Travis lying on the side of the road and called the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office. When the Department of Public Safety troopers arrived, they noticed Travis’s 1998 Pontiac Trans Am had veered off the side of the road and collided with construction barricades. The troopers stated that Travis was naked, had bruises on his face and smelled of alcohol.

Travis refused to take a blood alcohol test. After the troopers arrested Travis, he allegedly threatened to shoot and kill them. Later at a hospital blood was drawn from Travis. Since Travis threatened the lives of the troopers, he was charged with retaliation and obstruction along with the DWI charge. He was released on a $21,500 bond the next morning.

This latest brush with the law was not Travis’s only alcohol-related arrest this year. In February, Travis was arrested on a misdemeanor public intoxication charge in Sanger, Texas. A police officer found Travis parked in front of a Baptist church. Allegedly Travis smelled of alcohol, slurred his words when he spoke to the police officer and there was an opened wine bottle in his 1998 Pontiac.

In June 2012, Travis’s attorney pled no-contest on behalf of his client for the February public intoxication charge. The court fined Travis with a $264 fine and 90 days of probation scheduled to end on September 23rd. The terms of the court ruling stated that the traffic violation would be erased from the record if Travis did not commit any other offenses in Denton County. The district attorney stated that since the arrest in February was not a DWI case, it won’t affect the most recent charges filed against Travis.

Police release 911 call from night of Travis’s arrest.

Usually, the events surrounding a DWI arrest aren’t as bizarre as what allegedly occurred with Travis, but if you are facing DUI or DWI charges it shouldn’t be taken lightly. Depending on the circumstances of your case, penalties could include probation, jail time, license suspension and fines. Schedule a free consultation with a DWI attorney to discuss your case. A skilled attorney will create a legal strategy that can help you effectively fight the charges.
