A 23-year-old Endicott man has pleaded not guilty to the accusation that he caused a driving under the influence accident on 21st of July on Route 17 that injured another driver.

Cory Starring, who has 2 prior driving while intoxicated convictions, was summoned to Broome County Court on the 13th of September on a seven-count indictment that included felony counts of reckless endangerment and driving while intoxicated. Further proceedings of the case were set for Tuesday by Judge Martin E. Smith.

According to the court papers, Starring had a blood alcohol content level of 0.19 percent when he hit another vehicle with his vehicle in the westbound lane near Endwell exit 69 on Route 17. The reckless endangerment charge alleges “Under circumstances evincing a depraved indifference to human life” he recklessly engaged in conduct that created a “grave risk of death” to the driver who was hit.

The accident occurred around 4 a.m. and when a Broome County Sheriff’s deputy reached the scene, there were two vehicles but only 1 driver was present at the accident spot. According to police, witnesses said Starring jumped out of his vehicle and fled on foot. After some time, Sheriff’s deputies found Starring on the George F. Highway and took him into custody after a short foot chase. Court papers showed that Starring also had in his possession a small amount of the drug MDMA.

The other driver who was injured in the accident was not identified by the authorities was taken to the UHS Wilson Medical Center for treatment of injuries he suffered in the accident.

Before this incident, Starring was convicted for driving while intoxicated 2 times. According to the court records, he was convicted on 9th of November 2009 for the first time in Vestal Town Court and was convicted on 23rd of July 2010 for the second time in Broome County Court. The court ordered to install an interlock device in his car but the interlock device was not installed in his vehicle when the accident happened in July.

His indictment lists felony counts of reckless endangerment, aggravated DWI, DWI, and misdemeanor counts of leaving the scene of a property damage accident, reckless driving, criminal possession of a controlled substance and circumvention of an ignition interlock device.

The next step of the case involves a pretrial conference to discuss the case with the prosecution and the judge, according to the Public Defender Jay Wilber.

Starring was locked up in the Broome County jail without bail.
