Often when sons and daughters drive with their parents, they use their best driving behavior, attempting to avoid the scrutiny of a backseat driver. Adult children with their parents may also feel protective, and drive as safely as possible to avoid causing injury to a loved one. The sad fact of the matter is that fatal car accidents do happen, and sometime result in injury, death and DWI charges. It is important for all drivers on the road to not only drive prudently, but to also abide by DWI laws.

The terrible consequences of driving drunk with a loved one could be no worse than that in the case of 45-year-old Gary Hendricks and his 77-year-old grandfather. According to the Long Island Press, Mr. Hendricks was driving a Chevy Suburban on Sunrise Highway in Suffolk County on Monday evening, when he rear-ended a GMC truck. The impact caused the truck to go over an embankment, and then roll over onto the corner of a road.

The violent accident caused Mr. Hendricks’ grandfather, Isaac Beal, to be ejected from the backseat of Mr. Hendricks’ vehicle. After being thrown, Mr. Beal was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Mr. Hendricks was also traveling with two other passengers, Donald Fowler in the other backseat, and Tina Downes, in the front seat. Both passengers were taken to hospitals. Mr. Fowler is unfortunately in critical condition at Stony Brook University Hospital, while Ms. Downes escaped the accident with non-life-threatening injuries. According to the Long Island Press, the occupants of the truck, a driver and passenger, did not sustain injuries.

Mr. Hendricks was charged with DWI and aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle. According to longisland.com, Mr. Hendricks is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip at a later date.
