Here at the DUI Foundation, we’re excited to partner with Carrie Armstrong, with the How To Be A Sober Girl blog. You can check out her blog here. Over the next thirty days, she has committed to a How To Be A Sober Girl 30 Day Kickstart campaign and we’ll be sharing her stories right here.

And without any more time, here’s Day Eleven:

I don’t talk about much any more. But the reason my recovery methods are so different from the norm is because my recovery background is too.

Essentially i used the same methods to recover from being in a wheelchair to being fully physically able, to also get sober and stay that way. Because of this I strongly believe that all types of recovery are the same. That the same tools can be utilized to recover from anything at anytime.

A HUGE part of this success relies heavily on the story we tell ourselves. And just as it would have been impossible for me to have seen myself as bed bound and been able to progress to being in a wheelchair then walking, I would never have been able to see myself as a person with an alcohol problem and gotten sober.

I had to see myself as able bodied. I had to imagine myself walking. I had to spend hours every day focused on that. Same as I had to see myself as successfully sober. See myself as happy and fulfilled without alcohol, before I could take any action to get that way.

I had to change my mindset, I had to tell a different story. And that story was of how i insisted it as going to be. I had to never doubt myself. Never deviate from that. Never let the old story b ack in.

And it worked. On all the levels I needed it to.

So decide. Today. Decide what your new story with alcohol is going to be. Start writing it down, start seeing it in your head. start letting it into your mind as you drift off to sleep so it seeps into your dreams. You are the captain of your own ship in this instance. Only you get to decide where the destination will be.
