Everyone makes mistakes, and it is easy to see how one of those mistakes could involve a DWI at some point in anyone’s life. While the attorneys at Nave DWI Defense Attorneys are avid about New York DWI defense, we also caution our clients against repeating the same mistake. Multiple DWI offenses land offenders in more hot water with each subsequent offense. And while this has always been true, the increased crackdowns enacted since September 2012 in our state make the consequences more dire, and the prospect of lifelong effects an even stronger reality. If you are charged with one DWI, the smart decision is to live and learn and not to repeat the same offense. Unfortunately, many people do not learn this lesson, often because they have an underlying problem preventing them from keeping their alcohol consumption in check and making the appropriate situation-based decisions.

One would think that being arrested, spending any amount of time in jail, facing the prosecution and court, and the expenses and effort associated with the consequences of a DWI would be enough of a deterrent; however, this is not always the case.

Reminder: Multiple DUI Consequences

In a story published by Syracuse.com illustrates how some offenders just don’t take their offense seriously enough. John Bobik 37 was arrested not once, not twice but five times for DWI.  Bobik also faces a misdemeanor charge for driving a vehicle without an ignition interlock device.  Bobik has already served two sentences for drunken driving and he was still released on his own recognizance.

The point of this story is that if you are charged with a DWI and seek the advice and representation of a DWI defense attorney, it is important to actually take the attorney’s advice and to take the proper steps to avoid reoffending, and to get any problems that may lead to another offense under control. Elvy, of course, did not have this opportunity given the fact that his offenses took place in the same night. However, he obviously did not learn anything from the first arrest.

An attorney can help with your defense in court and can help you to understand how to successfully face the consequences in your case, and can even advise you on finding help for alcohol-related problems. However, legal counsel is only one part in your quest to get your life on track and put DWIs behind you.
