Here at the DUI Foundation, we’re excited to partner with Carrie Armstrong, with the How To Be A Sober Girl blog. You can check out her blog here. Over the next thirty days, she has committed to a How To Be A Sober Girl 30 Day Kickstart campaign and we’ll be sharing her stories right here.

And without any more time, here’s Day Two.

Hello!

Hope Day No2 finds you all well..well and covered in Post It Notes…

I’ve had some requests from folk about more phrases to write on the aforementioned Post It Notes-so here are a few…

  • I’m not drinking today
  • I’m not drinking right now
  • Sober is easy
  • No (insert name of most common drink here) please!
  • You can do 30 days without drinking, I know you can
  • Keep up the great work
  • I’m building new momentum
  • I’m forming new habits
  • I’m in control
  • I decide
  • Not tonight, thanks
  • I don’t drink

You can add your own of course, but please stick these ones up too because you are going to be using them at different stages throughout the next 30 days…

Today’s tip should have been a video again, but unfortunately my voice sounds like the Cookie Monster so I’m not going to put you through 5 minutes of that.

It’s not anywhere near as involved as the Post-It one, because I REALLY want you to do a thorough job on that. It’s really quite important. And experience has taught me that if I send you something massively involved everyday? You will just stop reading these emails…and who can blame you? A Kickstart into sobriety should never feel overwhelming. Not ever. So this is just a practical tip to knock cravings on the head.

Carbonated Water. Literally just bog standard Sparkling Water. The stuff that’s about 50p for 2 litres in the supermarket.

Take it to work, drink it throughout the day. Order it with meals if you are going out. Don’t ask me why it works. Don’t ask me how it works. All I know is that when I could not control my drinking and desperately needed to in my last few years of drinking, like if i was working away etc and needed to make sure I wouldn’t get pissed in front of folk, I would chug the stuff constantly and it would stop me drinking the entire time I was away. It’s pretty bloody amazing actually.

It’s something I’ve seen a lot of success with when I recommend it to others who are trying to cut down or stop drinking too.

So. Do yourself a favour and go stock up on it.

Then go write another shedload of Post It notes around your abode please…

Obviously we will be extending our Beverage Repertoire beyond sparkling water as we progress. And tomorrow we can start and talk about how to handle the inevitable pitfalls and worries about how to approach a sober weekend. but for now? Sparkling Water and Post It Notes please my lovelies…
