It’s now the holiday season and along comes lots of parties with co-workers, family and friends. New York’s STOP DWI Campaign just completed a Thanksgiving DWI crackdown and resulted in hundreds of stops over the state. In Erie County, as an example, they reported over 200 spots in the county alone.

From the Buffalo News;

In addition to the DWI stops, other motorists were ticketed for speeding, distracted driving, having passengers not wearing seat belts and one crash remains under investigation, according to Scott Zylka, the sheriff office’s spokesman.

Several years back, the New York State STOP-DWI Association, Inc. launched the “STOP-DWI Crackdown Weekends.” The theory behind this program is that by better coordinating and promoting county efforts, jointly, the various agencies can achieve greater visibility of DWI enforcement activities in New York State. The Association believes that research findings demonstrate that highly visible, publicized efforts like the STOP-DWI crackdowns can further reduce the incidence of DWI.

For the next few weeks, the STOP-DWI crackdown will be in full force. Officially, the program begins on December 18th and runs through the New Year, ending on January 3rd. This means increased police patrols and checkpoints throughout the region.
