Solemn Website

As reported in the Houston Chronicle, The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) introduced a new website dedicated to the “Faces of Drunk Driving”. The website introduces individuals and families affected by drunk driving accidents. The site provides a glimpse into the lives of survivors seriously affected by drunk driving accidents. It also shares the stories on behalf of individuals that did not survive because of a drunk driving accident.

The site is powerful and definitely evokes emotion. The TxDOT’s driving while intoxicated (DWI) prevention program is dubbed “Save a Life”. The hope is that the powerful images and stories behind the website will stay with citizens and promote them to take action and become proactive to keep the roads safe for the 4th of July and beyond.

There were 1,170 alcohol-related car crash fatalities in the state last year. Law enforcement in will increase patrols during a 10-day time frame for the holiday in attempts to limit DWI incidents.

New York’s Crackdown

The State of New York established STOP-DWI (Special Traffic Options Program for Driving While Intoxicated) Crackdowns. The effort promotes counties within New York to better coordinate with each other. The program’s ultimate goal is to decrease DWI incidents statewide through a more cohesive anti-DWI campaign.

The STOP-DWI Crackdown events are organized on a local level. Coordinators work in concert with local and state law enforcement agencies. Law enforcement patrols are increased during holidays such as Independence Day. The increased patrols are publicized in order to promote increased public awareness and safe driving. Police throughout the state of New York will increase patrols from July 3rd to July 8th.

July 4th – One of the Nation’s Deadliest Drunk Driving Days

According to an AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety report, over 40% of traffic-related deaths are caused by drunk driving accidents. The 4th of July holiday ranks second as the deadliest drunk driving day. December 31st, New Year’s Eve, ranks number one.

Tragic DWI-related accidents can occur anywhere – in Texas, in New York and beyond. Law enforcement and independent organizations in these states and others around the nation are ramping up efforts to curb DWI incidents this 4th of July holiday. However, their hard work can only go so far to put a stop to these tragedies on the road. Citizens must also take the initiative to keep the roads safe.
